Caring for Our Healthy Future – Giving Tuesday 2023

The Coachella Valley is facing a healthcare professional shortage crisis – there simply are not enough nurses, doctors, therapists, technicians and others to care for our community. These types of jobs not only provide excellent careers for local students, but they meet an urgent workforce need. This year alone, our local hospitals have a significant shortage of nurses, and 20% of RNs are approaching retirement. These shortages will impact the care our residents are able to receive.

OneFuture is working with local partners like our three K-12 school districts, Desert Healthcare District and Foundation, Desert Care Network, Eisenhower Health, Riverside University Health Systems-Behavioral Health, Desert Oasis Healthcare, IEHP, College of the Desert, CSUSB, UCR, Jewish Family Services, Health Career Connection and other to help students explore these careers and get the education and skills training they need to be our next generation healthcare providers.

Our Giving Tuesday fund will help local students achieve their goals of working in the healthcare field. Your support will provide needed scholarships to local youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college and pursue a career in healthcare.

Since 2010, OneFuture has provided scholarships and student support services to local students who have earned 537 degrees in health majors, 39 Masters degrees, 11 Doctoral degrees and 131 Nursing degrees.

Our scholars are part of the solution!

Lilyanna Scialdone

B.S. Nursing | West Coast University, Class of 2023

“Words can’t even explain how grateful I am for the opportunity I’ve had over the last 2 years. As of August, I graduated from nursing school and 2 weeks later, passed the NCLEX on my first try so I am officially a Registered Nurse. I then had an interview with Desert Regional Medical Center and was hired on the spot. I am super excited and grateful to begin my career at home in the Coachella Valley. Next, I want to get my doctorate in nursing.”

Dominic DeAnda

B.S. Dental Hygiene | Loma Linda University, Class of 2023

“I personally have wanted to be in the dental field since I was a little boy. My parents have always told me that if there was something that I wanted to do I would somehow work myself into do it and doing well at it. Personally my journey doesn’t end here. I plan to attend a master program for public health in the year 2025.”

Angela Chapman

B.S. Psychology | UC San Diego, Class of 2023

“I am a graduating senior at the University of California San Diego from Desert Hot Springs, CA. I will be attending the University of Iowa for the Clinical Psychology PhD this Fall 2023 as a NSF GRFP fellow and plan to specialize in neuropsychology. Through these next 6-7 years, will hopefully get the expertise and training needed to realize my career as a clinical scientist and neuropsychologist.”

Improving Healthcare for All

Beginning in 2021, OneFuture and our partners launched a new initiative to support local Black and African American students to become healthcare professionals and serve in the Coachella Valley.

The goal is to assure that our healthcare system is truly representative of all communities served, improving generational health outcomes and guaranteeing that the whole community benefits from higher quality healthcare. This year we have 9 outstanding scholars in this important program, and we have awarded 19 students since the program began.

Please join us with a gift today to support this cohort of students.

Thank you to the following donors who launched this important program with their gifts totaling $310,000 so far. Let’s keep the momentum going!
